Angelus Block Health Product Declarations Published. - March 3, 2017

Building On Our Commitment to Sustainable Products

Angelus continues to advance its sustainability value by publishing a set of six Health Product Declarations (HPDs), reported to 100 ppm per the HPD Open Standard 2.0. We are the first cmu producer to publish to the new standard, and the only producer in Southern California with published HPDs or an EPD.

Each of the six HPDs applies to mix design and raw material groupings, such as Medium Weight, Medium Weight White, and Lightweight, and cover all typically specified cmu. Our products can now contribute to LEED and CA-CHPS material ingredient reporting credits.

The HPDs and EPD are available from our website at Product Declarations.

We've also updated guides and specs to include the new HPDs:

Sustainability and mission statement announcements from Angelus Block. - April 4, 2016

Angelus Block Commitments to Sustainability

We are pleased to announce the renewal of our ICC-ES Verification of Attributes Report, VAR-1018, for concrete masonry units with 25% postconsumer recycled content. A copy is available here.

In support of our Angelus Block Take-Back Program, we now have a fourth recycling facility in operation at our Orange location. The facility crushes returned, unusable, and demo'd concrete masonry waste into recycled aggregate. We operate other such plants in Sun Valley, Rialto, and Oxnard.

Along with placing high value on the sustainability of building materials, we also value the sustainability of our local businesses and economies. Angelus Block is the only block producer in the greater Los Angeles region to obtain all of its cinder, rock, and sand materials from California-only sources.

Angelus Block Publishes First Externally Verified Environmental Product Declaration for Concrete Masonry Products

Southern California concrete block producer is the first to publish a Type III EPD based on the new Product Category Rules for Manufactured Concrete and Concrete Masonry Products.

Sun Valley, CA April 14, 2015 — Angelus Block Co., Inc., the largest manufacturer and supplier of concrete masonry unit (CMU) products in Southern California, announced the release today of the first Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) under the new Product Category Rules (PCR) for CMU.

The EPD for Angelus Block Concrete Masonry Units represents "our continued commitment to the green building market by providing leading edge, and highly useable tools to inform architectural design decisions," said Edward Antonini, President, Angelus Block. "Concrete masonry is an essential building system, and our goal is to educate stakeholders in the building process about its inherent, and extensive, green attributes. A considerable portion of our website is dedicated to it. The Type III EPD is an important progression in our support of green rating systems in general, and to material transparency in particular."

Architects have the challenge of balancing sustainable goals, client needs, and practical material choices for successful execution in the field. "By evaluating materials with EPDs," said Craig Biggi, Principal Associate, Gruen Associates, Los Angeles, "architects are able to get a more comprehensive understanding of the sustainable merits of a product, and how these material choices affect the environment we live in. Manufacturers such as Angelus Block providing transparent environmental information consolidated in a verified summary is definitely a step in the right direction."

The EPD includes a substantial set of 69 individual mix designs for products from each of their seven CMU manufacturing locations in and beyond the Los Angeles metroplex.

"We provide a considerable cross-section of our product lines," said Antonini. "For the EPD to be as effective as possible, we needed to cover multiple materials, unit sizes and configurations to have our core products fully represented."

Angelus Block's EPD is available for download at http://www.angelusblock.com/docs/Angelus_Block_CMU_Type_III_EPD.pdf.

Angelus Block Publishes First Environmental Product Declaration for U.S.-Made Concrete Masonry Products

Southern California concrete block producer responds to the call for more building product environmental impact reporting and transparency.

Sun Valley, Calif., November 20, 2013 - Angelus Block Co., Inc. announced today the release of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for their concrete masonry units (CMU). Angelus Block is the largest manufacturer and supplier of CMU products in the Southern California construction industry, servicing a region from the Central Coast to San Diego.

An EPD is a standardized way of communicating the environmental impacts of a product in a scientifically recognized and compact format. EPDs are currently receiving significant attention as an important first step to achieving product transparency "labels" akin to the nutrition information found on food products.

Sustainable design, as a movement - and in some cases a mandate - to construct buildings that minimize impacts to environmental and human health, continues to grow and evolve. LCAs and/or EPDs have contributing roles in green rating systems such as LEED®:, Green Globes, and The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), and by state and local codes such as California's CALGreen.

USGBC's pending launch this month of the latest generation of its rating systems, known as LEED v4, is already moving the needle with several new credit requirements that include product EPDs. The new credits introduce several options and reporting requirements for demonstrating transparency in materials. Building product manufacturers that wish to remain in the green arena are assessing how to comply.

Angelus Block is the first U. S. CMU producer to publish an EPD. It includes a substantial set of 69 individual mix designs for products from each of their seven CMU manufacturing locations in and beyond the Los Angeles metroplex.

"We were looking to provide more than a single-product report," said Edward Antonini, president of Angelus Block. "We knew we needed to cover multiple materials, unit sizes and configurations to have our core products fully represented. Our market includes many high-profile design firms dedicated to green leadership, so we felt the standard should be higher and greater detail would be appropriate."

The more rigorous requirements of LEED v4 also present a challenge to architects in identifying materials that not only contribute to the green goals of a project, but are also within a pragmatic distance. "A design firm's skill in creating buildings, and harnessing all the tools available to deliver green value for its clients, ultimately gets translated into physical materials," said Rick Martin, director of sustainability, Perkowitz+Ruth Architects. "Angelus Block represents an essential building product, and we appreciate them taking a lead role in the new material disclosure paths. We design with masonry on many projects, so it's great to know producers like Angelus are already supporting some of the new requirements."

Angelus Block's EPD is available for download at www.angelusblock.com/docs/Angelus_Block_EPD.pdf. The initial release is an internally verified report. A Type III, third-party verified report is planned and pending the adoption of a CMU-specific Product Category Rule (PCR) currently in development. A PCR provides instructions for data and reporting in the creation of an EPD.

Angelus Block Receives ICC-ES SAVE: Verification of Attributes Report® for Postconsumer Recycled Content

Sun Valley, CA - April 28, 2011 - Angelus Block Co., Inc. has received independent verification of a minimum 25% postconsumer recycled content in its concrete masonry units. ICC Evaluation Service has released a Verification of Attributes Report®: (VAR-1018) issued under its Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation®: (SAVE®:) Program, which provides a comprehensive evaluation of the sustainable attributes of building products. Postconsumer content offers the most value to projects seeking to satisfy green building strategies.

The VAR for Angelus Block encompasses production plants in four counties and regions: Ventura (Oxnard, California), Los Angeles (Gardena, California), Orange (Orange, California), and San Bernardino/Riverside (Fontana, California).

"Angelus Block can uniquely offer proximity to the entire Southern California region," said John Surratt, Angelus Block Architectural Sales Manager. "Though LEED Rating Systems establish a 500-mile radius for their Regional Materials credits, the practical reality is that many masonry contractors either haul their own materials, or often require quick access to 'parts-and-pieces' as needed to keep things moving. Projects are better served, and real environmental impact is reduced, when product sources are 20 to 30 miles away rather than 120 or more miles from the project site. It's an economic and environmental win-win."

Applicability is noted in VAR-1018 to seven rating systems, codes, and standards, including four of the LEED Rating Systems - LEED 2009 for New Construction, LEED 2009 for Schools, LEED 2009 for Core and Shell, and LEED for Homes 2008. Compliance with the recently updated and mandated 2010 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) is included in the VAR, as well as the National Green Building Standard (ICC 700-2008), and ANSI/GBI 01-2010 - Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings.

"Though products in and of themselves cannot earn rating system points," Surratt explained, "high recycled content products such as that evaluated in this VAR, especially when combined with the high cement-replacement potential of masonry grout, provide a very substantial contribution to a project's green goals. Having a resource such as this VAR gives the project team confidence in specifying high RC cmu from a widely respected source without concern of any kind of distance handicap. It is a very powerful asset in the green designer's palette."
